Cardiology Question for the Week of July 1, 2019

Question:

I am wondering if you can help me determine a code for this procedure. A patient was admitted for a course of Tikosyn (dofetilide) loading by our electrophysiology (EP) physician. I do not have an actual dictation yet, but this person was admitted as an inpatient for this two-three day process. Do I have any CPT code to add to this?

Answer:

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires that anyone starting Tikosyn must be admitted to the hospital for a minimum of three days with heart and kidney function monitoring. There is no special “procedure” or procedure code. The patient will be monitored to determine the appropriate dosage and to make sure there is no reaction to the medicine.
