Cardiology Question for the Week of February 19, 2018

Question:

We had a patient who presented with an uncontrollable nosebleed, and the physician performed angiography of the external carotid arteries. What code would be assigned?

Answer:

Selective external carotid angiography is coded with the add-on code 36227 if it is performed after a selective common or internal carotid artery angiogram (36222, 36223, or 36224). If bilateral external carotid angiograms are performed, add modifier -50.

If performed without a preceding common or internal carotid angiogram, assign unlisted code 37799 for selective external carotid angiography.
