We are trying to determine whether to dispense drugs for ED patients through our pharmacy or to install an automatic dispensing system in the department that charges automatically when the patient’s account number or medical record number is entered.

Do you have any advice about this topic?

There are pros and cons to this topic that you will want to consider. For example, oftentimes, drugs will be removed from a department’s automatic dispensing system for a patient but not used but are not credited back to the patient—a scenario that causes an over-charge. Having the pharmacy dispense the drugs can cause the patient to wait for pain relief or much needed phar-maceuticals for their treatment.
