Laboratory Question for the Week of June 22, 2020

Question:

When should I use G2023 as opposed to G2024?

Answer:

HCPCS codes G2023 and G2024 were created specifically for reporting specimen collection for COVID-19 testing. If billing for Medicare for the specimen collection fee, either G2023 or G2024 must be used. Code G2024 should be reported when the specimen is collected from an individual in an SNF or by a laboratory on behalf of an HHA. Code G2023 should be used when collecting from home-bound patients, not on behalf of an HHA.
