Question:
When may a provider appropriately report both immunocytochemistry (IHC) and flow cytometry services for the same specimen?
Answer:
Immunocytochemistry (e.g., CPT® codes 88342, 88341, 88344, 88360, 88361) and flow cytometry (e.g., CPT codes 88184–88189) are generally not reimbursed when duplicate testing is performed on the same or similar specimens. Typically, the diagnosis should be established using one of these methods. However, a payer may reimburse both procedures if both methods are medically necessary because the initial method does not fully explain the findings identified during light microscopic examination. If the need for both methods is documented in the medical record, the provider may report both flow cytometry and IHC by appending modifier 59 or XU.
