Question:

What is a CCMI and how is it utilized?

Answer:

Each NCCI procedure-to-procedure (PTP) edit has been assigned a Correct Coding Modifier Indicator (CCMI). A CCMI of “0” indicates that NCCI PTP-associated modifiers cannot be used to bypass the edit. A CCMI of “1” indicates that NCCI PTP-associated modifiers may be used to bypass an edit under appropriate circumstances. A CCMI of “9” indicates that the use of NCCI PTP-associated modifiers is not specified. This indicator is used for all code pairs with a deletion date that is the same as the effective date. For more information, refer to Chapter 1 of the NCCI Policy Manual at https://www.cms.gov/medicare/coding-billing/national-correct-coding-initiative-ncci-edits/medicare-ncci-policy-manual.
