Answer:
The American Medical Association revised the description of CPT code 94640 in 2016 to clarify that this is a bundled code representing both diagnostic and therapeutic services and that it includes different treatment modes. It is appropriate to assign 94640 when documentation indicates the treatment is administered to a patient with an acute airway obstruction, and it may be reported for the induction of sputum for diagnostic purposes.
