Laboratory Question for the Week of September 25, 2017

Question:

The CCI code-pair edits include a column with a modifier indicator—sometimes 0, 1, or 2. What do each of these represent?

Answer:

Each of the Column 1/Column 2 code pairs in the National Correct Coding Initiative (CCI) is associated with one of the following modifier indicators, which are listed in the table:

  • An indicator of 0 means a modifier may never be attached to the code.
  • An indicator of 1 means a NCCI-associated modifier may be used to over-ride the edit, as long as documentation supports its use.
  • An indicator of 9 means that an edit has been rescinded or is no longer valid.
