Question:
Can the following CPT® code for glucose point of care (POC) be used for a hospital patient?

Answer:
A. Yes. It is the intended code for today’s technology if the glucose meter that is being used has been approved by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) as a screening device and for home use.
However, if the device that the hospital is using is one that has been approved by the FDA for resulting a diagnostic glucose, the following would be appropriate. This would be applicable to i-STAT and Piccolo instruments.

A glance at the list of tests granted waived status under CLIA will show which of the POC manufacturers and instruments or devices have been assigned CPT 82962 or 82947. Of course, the hospital does not need to apply the QW modifier but this list is a great resource to identify the CPT approved for the POC methodology.
