What is the purpose of the cytopathology concentration technique (CPT® code 88108), and which types of specimen samples commonly require this technique before smear preparation?
Cytopathology, concentration technique (88108) (such as Saccomanno, cytocentrifugation,and cytospins) may involve many different types of specimen samples. For example, bronchial, cervicovaginal, and conjunctival brushing; nipple discharge; sputum; and gastrointestinal epithelial cell specimens may require concentration before a smear can be prepared. Concentration techniques are often combined with smears and filter preparations to identify malignant cells.
