Question:

What are the key changes introduced in the 2025 ICD-10-CM code update regarding specificity and claim processing?

Answer:

The ICD-10-CM code update for 2025 follows a trend of moving away from unspecified codes and toward increased specificity. Payers continue to refine claim edits following the October 1st update, which focused on increased specificity and creation of more detailed codes to allow for improved differentiation of disease/condition. This year you will also see an increased requirement for codes to indicate the severity of a condition, allowing for better distinction between mild, moderate, and severe presentations of a disease.
