Question:

What revenue codes are acceptable when reporting the 85XXX series? Is 0300 safe to report?

Answer:

The proper revenue code for the 85XXX series of CPT® is 0305. However, many MACs do not require third-digit specific revenue codes for laboratory coding, and 0300 is generally accepted. Revenue Code 0309 is also acceptable. To be on the safe side, have your patient financial services staff check with your MAC to verify its policy in your state. Some third-party payers may also have policies specifying revenue code requirements for hematology and other laboratory services.
