Question:
For 2024, what codes are utilized when a medically necessary pulmonary artery angiogram is conducted preceding pulmonary artery stenting, without being combined with a diagnostic heart catheterization service? Describe the appropriate coding sequence, including the relevant catheter placement codes and the distinction between initial artery treatment and additional artery treatment.
Answer:
If medically necessary pulmonary artery angiogram is performed prior to the performance of pulmonary artery stenting not in conjunction with a diagnostic heart catheterization service, this is captured with 75741, 75741, and 75746 along with appropriate catheter placement code(s) from range 36013 – 36015. 37236 is used for the initial artery treated. Each additional artery is captured with 37237. The MUE for 37236 is 1 with an MAI of 2. The MUE for 37237 is 2 with an MAI of 3. 37236 and 37237 include angioplasty, when performed within the same vessel as stenting.
