Question:

What is the purpose of using code 94010 in pulmonary function studies, and why is it important to verify payer-specific coverage policies before billing for this procedure?

Answer:

Code 94010, spirometry is the mainstay of the pulmonary function study. The procedure is utilized in the initial stages of the diagnosis process to differentiate between obstructive and restrictive disorders. The results of the procedure may lead to the physician requesting more extensive provocative testing. Many states have coverage policies for spirometry. It is recommended that you check with the Medicare Administrative Contractor (MAC) or other payer for coverage policies relevant to your facility. See Appendix A for information on local coverage determinations (LCDs).
