The Top 20 Things That the Pandemic Did for Us?

EDITOR’S NOTE: Rose T. Dunn, a nationally recognized health information management (HIM) authority, two-time past president of the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), and COO of First Class Solutions, shows off a keen sense of humor in this column about a few silver linings of the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • Awoken our need to reprioritize what is important: Family and Safety.
  • Allowed us to wear the same T-shirt for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • Saved gallons of water from not showering or washing clothes.
  • Strengthened our IT skills or forced us to learn how to use technology.
  • Taught us how to multi-task during conference calls without others hearing our keystrokes.
  • Forced us to think out of the box.
  • Heightened our respect for healthcare, first responder, and other heroes in the shadows, like the grocery workers, janitors, and delivery drivers.
  • Tapped our innovation capabilities with concocting new recipes from what was left in the refrigerator and pantry.
  • Forced us to walk outside and around our homes and appreciate the fresh air, flowers, and birds.
  • Taught us the new math and other subject our children are learning.
  • Gave us ample time to learn more than we ever wanted to know about our spouse and children.
  • Saved a ton of money not paying for gas, lunch, dry cleaning, make-up, beauticians, barbers, and happy hours.
  • Gave new life to the coral reefs and environment.
  • Introduced face masks as the new accessory for our wardrobes.
  • Allowed time to listen to educational webinars and watch seasons of shows on Roku, HULU and Netflix.
  • Demonstrated that telecommuting can be as effective as being on-site for many workers.
  • Offered us the opportunity to grow our own gardens and unclutter our homes.
  • Inspired us to appreciate that giving is far better than receiving.
  • Learned how important meaningful communication between family, friends, and our co-workers was.
  • Taught us to appreciate life.
