Question:

If an IV antibiotic was administered but the MAR only contains the time the infusion started, can we charge for an IV push?

Answer:

If the MAR has no stop time, then go to nursing documentation (progress note) to see if a stop time was documented there. Some payers will allow a charge for an IV push in this scenario since the physician order and the intent of the administration was by intravenous route. It is advisable to check with payers and Medicare MAC for any coding and billing guidance.
