Question:
Can you clarify the use of the procedure behind code 958303?
Answer:
This procedure consists of placing an actigraph (a wristwatch-like device) on an upper extremity (or, in the case of monitoring primarily for periodic limb movement disorder, a lower extremity) for a period of 3 or more days. The device monitors movement continuously during the period of use. Following removal of the actigraph, recorded data are downloaded into a computer and analyzed by visual inspection and/or by software algorithms that provide quantitative estimates of sleep-wake schedule, total sleep time, and napping behavior. These data are analyzed and interpreted in the clinical context by the evaluating professional. Some actigraphs are now equipped with light-monitoring instrumentation that allows the determination of light exposure patterns as well. Actigraphy can provide diagnostic information that is not readily obtainable by means of polysomnography, subjective reports, or other means.
