Cardiology Question for the Week of August 15, 2022

Question:

For lower extremity incompetent veins treatment services, what code would I report for the chemical ablation of incompetent extremity veins?

Answer:

Code 0524T is reported for chemical ablation of incompetent extremity veins using a balloon to isolate the incompetent vein from other veins in the extremity. A multi-lumen catheter is maneuvered into the vein to be treated and the balloon is inflated to isolate the vein and deliver to it the embolizing or sclerosing material. Guidewire(s) may be inserted through the additional lumen, or contrast may be injected to help guide the procedure. Code 0524T is a complete code, codes for access; diagnostic imaging, or imaging guidance may not be reported separately.
