Cardiology Question for the Week of December 16, 2019

Question:

Do you have any tips when using 33340 with heart catheterization codes?

Answer:

The 2017 AMA CPT Changes, An Insider’s View states the following regarding when code 33340 may be assigned with heart catheterization codes: Unless catheterization of the left ventricle is performed using a nontransseptal approach for indications distinct from the left atrial appendage closure procedure, code 33340 would not be reported in conjunction with left heart catheterization codes 93452 and 93453 and left heart/right heart catheterization codes 93458, 93459, 93460, 93531, 93532 and 93533. Unless a complete right heart catheterization is performed for indications distinct from the left atrial appendage closure procedure, code 33340 would not be reported in conjunction with right heart catheterization code 93451, left heart catheterization code 93453 and coronary angiography without concomitant left heart catheterization codes 93456, 93460, 93461, 93530, 93531, 93532 and 93533.
