Question:

During an acute MI, a coronary angiogram and angioplasty were performed on a patient. Code 92941 specifies “any combination of intracoronary stent, atherectomy, and angioplasty, including aspiration thrombectomy when performed, single vessel.” Since we only performed angioplasty, do I code 92920 instead of 92941?

Answer:

You would report 92941. Although the code description indicates any combination of angioplasty, stent, and atherectomy, the American Medical Association (AMA) clarified in CPT® Assistant January 2014 that this code would be appropriate for one or more of the specified treatments during acute MI.

92941 Percutaneous transluminal revascularization of acute total/subtotal occlusion during acute myocardial infarction, coronary artery or coronary artery bypass graft, any combination of intracoronary stent, atherectomy and angioplasty, including aspiration thrombectomy when performed, single vessel
