Cardiology Question for the Week of October 29, 2018

Question:

If we perform a Duplex scan of the renal vasculature and a Duplex scan of the abdomen assessing the mesenteric vasculature, would we assign CPT® code 93975 with one unit or assign 93976 twice with two units?

Answer:

Only one code would be reported. Codes 93975 and 93976 both use the terminology “and/or,” indicating that if one or more organs are evaluated, the exam is coded only once.

93975 Duplex scan of arterial inflow and venous outflow of abdominal, pelvic, scrotal contents and/or retroperitoneal organs; complete study
93976 limited study

Whether or not 93975 or 93976 would be coded depends on whether arterial and venous flow are evaluated. Both codes require grayscale imaging of the vascular structures, color Doppler, and spectral analysis.
