Cardiology Question for the Week of January 8, 2018

Question:

Per the CPT® description, code 36223 includes angiography of the extracranial carotid circulation. Does this mean that you would not code 36222 and 36223 together for the same side if both the cervical and cerebral arteries were imaged? Is CPT 36222 included in CPT 36223?

Answer:

Each of the base carotid/vertebral angiogram codes (36222–36226) includes the work of the lower codes in that grouping. Code 36223 includes the work of 36222, and 36224 includes the work of both 36223 and 36222. Code 36226 includes the work of 36225.

Code 36227 is an add-on code and must be reported with one of the following: 36222, 36223, or 36224. Code 36228 is also an add-on code and must be reported with one of the following: 36223, 36224, 36225, or 36226.
