Cardiology Question for the Week of October 23, 2017

Question:

What is the best code to assign for a generator change from a dual-chamber to a single-chamber? Our cardiologist capped off a lead and then replaced a dual-chamber with a single-chamber pacemaker.

Answer:

Since the lead was capped and not removed, a code is not assigned for the lead, and you would code only for the generator replacement. Since the new one is a single-chamber, the following code would be reported instead of one for the dual-chamber.

33227 Removal of permanent pacemaker pulse generator with replacement of pacemaker pulse generator; single lead system
