General Question for the Week of April 20, 2020

Question:

What does the report need to indicate to allow billing of abscess drainage codes 49405–49407?

Answer:

When the patient leaves the procedure room, those codes require that the catheter be left in place for longer-term drainage. This might be indicated by stating that the catheter was sutured in place or was attached to gravity drainage when the patient was sent back to the room.
