General Question for the Week of February 10, 2020

Question:

New codes 64454 and 64624 were introduced for 2020 for genicular nerve blocks and destruction. Does the doctor need to document anything specific for these codes?

Answer:

Yes, for both codes, documentation must support that the superolateral, superomedial and inferomedial branches were all injected. If the doctor does not inject all three branches, or the documentation does not indicate that all three branches were injected, modifier 52 must be added to the code.
