General Question for the Week of February 26, 2024

Question:

How are ureteral stent placements coded differently depending on whether a previously existing nephrostomy tract is utilized or a new access is created?

Answer:

There are three codes for the placement of a ureteral stent (totally internal device). All three codes include any diagnostic studies performed, imaging guidance, and supervision and interpretation. Report code 50693 for placement through a previously existing nephrostomy tract. This code includes the replacement of the nephrostomy tube if performed. When a new access is created, code 50694 should be charged. This code describes the scenario when no percutaneous nephrostomy (PCN) is placed with the stent. From a new access when a separate nephrostomy is placed at the same time as a stent, instead submit code 50695.
