Question:

May an abdominal duplex scan (93975) be billed more than once in the same day?

Answer:

The MUE is one. It would not be expected to see it coded more than once as it includes any and all of the abdominal/retroperitoneal/scrotal organs. The MAI is three, so it can be over-ridden by the Medicare Administrative Contractor (MAC) if medical necessity was proven. If, for instance, the patient’s condition significantly changed and another scan was required, then you could bill it again. Excellent documentation of medical necessity would be required for a second exam.
