General Question for the Week of October 15, 2018

Question:

I have heard there is a new value-based bundled payment model for Medicare. Can you provide any information about this?

Answer:

The Bundled Payments for Care Improvement (Advanced) model is designed, reports the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), to improve quality and reduce costs for inpatient and outpatient care. There are now 1,299 entities (acute-care hospitals and physician group practices) that will participate between October 1, 2018 and December 31, 2023. They will receive bundled payments for certain episodes of care as an alternative to fee-for-service payments that reward only the volume of care delivered.
