Laboratory Question for the Week of December 18, 2023

Question:

Can you explain the correlation between the number of markers analyzed in flow cytometry tests and the corresponding codes that we should report?

Answer:

Codes 88187–88189 describe the interpretation of flow cytometry tests. Flow cytometry measurements are typically displayed as dot plots or histograms, which the physician interprets. The code for reporting physician interpretation depends on the number of markers analyzed: report 88187 for 2–8 markers,
88188 for 9–15 markers, and 88189 for 16 or more markers.
