Question:

A laboratory is implementing a new HPV assay that uses in vitro PCR technology to simultaneously test both high-risk pooled and individual results. As of 2025, which CPT® code should be reported for this service, and which Category III code has been deleted in conjunction with this update?

Answer:

Code 87626 is a newer technology HPV assay that allows for the simultaneous testing of both high-risk pooled and individual results using in vitro PCR. With the creation of CPT 87626, Category III code 0500T was simultaneously deleted for 2025. Refer to the updated parentheticals that clarify the reporting of CPT 87624 vs. 87626.
