Laboratory Question for the Week of June 4, 2018

Question:

Last week you said there were more than 80 new molecular pathology codes. Do you know why there are so many?

Answer:

One reason is because there are now more than 1,500 molecular diagnostic tests now on the market, and molecular pathology remains one of the most rapidly advancing diagnostic fields, according to a series introduction in the June 2017 issue of Archives of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine. These facts make it nearly impossible to maintain a comprehensive set of unique CPT® to represent this rapidly expanding technology, say industry experts.
