Laboratory Question for the Week of March 19, 2018

Question:

Does Medicare allow labs to bill for a molecular pathology interpretation done by a PhD or geneticist?

Answer:

Billing for the professional interpretation of molecular pathology findings is limited to the physician or pathologist and does not include the interpretation provided by the PhD or geneticist. Be certain that if reporting a separate professional charge for the interpretation that documentation supports the medical indication and that the credentials of the physician or pathologist are clearly indicated on the interpretive report.
