Laboratory Question for the Week of March 4, 2019

Question:

What fees are impacted by CLIA 20-percent increase?

Answer:

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services  (CMS) announced fee increases for laboratories certified under the Clinical Laboratory Improvements Act (CLIA) of 1988 for the first time in 20 years. The notification was published in the Federal Register on December 31, 2018.

The 20-percent increase applies to the following:

  • Certificate fees (but not to the registration certificate)
  • Compliance fees
  • Additional fees.
