Laboratory Question for the Week of May 21, 2018

Question:

When does the new MAAA code for oncology take effect?

Answer:

The American Medical Association CPT® Editorial Panel established the following new MAAA code that took effect on January 1, 2018.

0011M Oncology, prostate cancer, mRNA expression assay of 12 genes (10 content and 2 housekeeping), RT-PCR test utilizing blood plasma and/or urine, algorithms to predict high-grade prostate cancer risk A

In transmittal 3988, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services noted that it had assigned the status indicator of “A” to it, which basically means that when these services are furnished to a hospital outpatient they will be paid under another payment system other than the outpatient prospective payment system (i.e., clinical laboratory fee schedule).
