Laboratory Question for the Week of May 8, 2023

Question:

For molecular pathology, what does the term “sequential” encompass?

Answer:

Individual, unique CPT® codes are “stacked” to represent medically indicated analytes. There is a logic-based determination for the analysis of multiple genes or variants. Step-by-step execution may rely on the result of a single gene before advancing to an additional single gene or multi-gene analysis. Testing determinations follow a logical order or sequence that is demonstrated in the final report. Serially, when there is a reflexive decision where results determine additional analyses are medically reasonable and necessary.
