For postmortem examination coding, how are the terms newborn, infant, and macerated stillborn defined?
Answer:
A “newborn” is defined as a person from birth through the 28th day. An “infant” is defined as a person from birth through the 12th month. A “macerated stillborn” is a stillborn whose body tissues have become softened, as happens when there is a delay between death in utero and delivery.
