Question:

How are laboratories vulnerable to the risk of fraud and abuse?

Answer:

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) in conjunction with the Healthcare Fraud Prevention Partnership (HFPP) highlight key reasons that all laboratories may be vulnerable to fraud and abuse schemes:

  • The variety and number of laboratories
  • Dual factor high-volume/low dollar characteristics of ordering, providing, and billing
  • Specialization complexity, technical challenges, and evolution of services.
