Question:

What codes should be reported if a bone biopsy is performed for evaluation of bone matrix structure?

Answer:

The following are the appropriate codes to report, according to the National Correct Coding Initiative Policy Manual for Medicare Services:

20220 Biopsy, bone, trocar, or needle; superficial (e.g., ilium, sternum, spinous process, ribs)
88307 Level V—surgical pathology, gross and microscopic examination
