Pharmacy Question for the Week of October 2, 2017

Question:

What code is assigned for Flucelvax Quadrivalent on a Medicare claim?

Answer:

According to October 2017 update to the outpatient prospective payment system, the following existing influenza vaccine with trade name Flucelvax Quadrivalent took effect January 1, 2017:

90674 Influenza virus vaccine, quadrivalent (ccIIV4), derived from cell cultures, subunit, preservative and antibiotic free, 0.5 mL dosage, for intramuscular

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services state that a new preservative, antibiotic-free influenza vaccine CPT code with the same trade name, Flucelvax Quadrivalent, will be effective on January 1, 2018. For the period between August 1, 2017 and December 31, 2017, Flucelvax Quadrivalent Preservative can be reported as Q2039 (influenza virus vaccine, not otherwise specified). The permanent CPT code for the Flucelvax Quadrivalent preservative influenza vaccine will be released on a later date, CMS states.
