Over the years, Observation has become used as the catch-all term to describe any hospitalized patient who is not admitted as an inpatient, a practice that is non-compliant with federal regulations. Billing services as covered care, when in fact it is not, can lead to accusations of false claims, the implications of which can be civil monetary penalties or more dire consequences for your facility.
Many factors contribute to confusion over the use of Observation, such as the varying definitions and time durations for Observation of the myriad of payers. To avoid improper billing that leads to trouble with payers and auditors, you must have a clear understanding of the how, the when, and the why of Observation services. That’s why we’ve brought Dr. Ronald Hirsch back for an essential review of Observation billing requirements. One of our most popular presenters, Dr. Hirsch walks you through an “A to Z” review of Observation, including its use for Medicare, Medicare Advantage, and commercial payers, and you’ll be provided with examples of compliantly prepared claims to accurately report Observation services. You and your clinical and revenue cycle teams will leave with a new understanding of how to get the billing of Observation services right.
Confusion arising from coding and billing for observation services has plagued hospitals for a long time. It’s a confusing concept and represents a potential landmine that, when tripped by submitting non-compliant claims, could wreak financial havoc on hospitals. To avoid trouble with payers and auditors, you must understand and correctly apply the latest coding and billing requirements for observation services.
