Sepsis remains one of the most disputed diagnoses in coding and clinical documentation. Conflicting definitions, Sepsis-2 versus Sepsis-3, combined with strict coding guidelines create an environment where payers frequently challenge claims. Denials often center on DRGs affected by sepsis, with auditors questioning the clinical validity of the diagnosis. The result? Lost revenue, compliance concerns, and excessive time spent on appeals. Inconsistent documentation, unclear linkage between infection and organ dysfunction, and noncompliant query practices only heighten the risk.
In this practical and focused session, Angela Comfort, DBA, MBA, RHIA, CDIP, CCS, CCS-P will guide you through strategies to close the gap between clinical documentation and coding requirements for sepsis. You’ll learn how to reconcile Sepsis-2, Sepsis-3, and AHA Coding Clinic guidance, apply compliant queries, and identify key clinical indicators that substantiate the diagnosis. Using real-world examples, Angela will demonstrate how to avoid common pitfalls, strengthen documentation, and successfully defend coding decisions against payer scrutiny.
Sepsis continues to be one of the most frequently denied diagnoses, impacting both revenue and quality metrics. Delaying action increases the risk of costly denials and compliance exposure. By attending, you’ll gain tools to identify documentation weaknesses before claims are submitted, strengthen provider engagement, and craft evidence-based appeals. You’ll also learn proven collaboration strategies that bridge the gap between CDI, coding, and clinical teams—helping you protect reimbursement and reduce audit risk in this high-stakes diagnosis category.
