Radiology Question for the Week of April 16, 2018

Question:

What codes would be used for a non-PET myocardial perfusion scan?

Answer:

For myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI), you would choose from the code range 78451–78454.

78452 multiple studies, at rest and/or stress (exercise or pharmacologic) and/or redistribution and/or rest reinjection
78453 single study, at rest or stress (exercise or pharmacologic)
78454 multiple studies, at rest and/or stress (exercise or pharmacologic) and/or redistribution and/or rest reinjection

As you can see by the descriptors, these all-inclusive codes include wall-motion and ejection- fraction studies. The radiopharmaceutical is still reported with the appropriate HCPCS code.
