Radiology Question for the Week of January 4, 2021

Question:

Can you tell me more about new ablation code 55880?

Answer:

Understand that the ablation procedure described by 55880 will also be performed in the operating room by a urologist. The ultrasound guidance is included in this procedure and not separately payable. Should the radiology department send staff to the OR to perform the ultrasound for the urologist, the hospital must decide how to separate the payment or credit for each department.

55880 Ablation of malignant prostate tissue, transrectal, with high intensity-focused ultrasound (HIFU), including ultrasonic guidance
