Radiology Question for the Week of July 13, 2020

Question:

Can imaging of the arch (36221) be reported with the codes for carotid or vertebral angiography?

Answer:

No, the codes for carotid and vertebral angiography include imaging of the arch. 36221 should not also be reported. 36221 should only be reported for a true arch study (an examination of the carotid and vertebral arteries from a non-selective catheterization of the thoracic aorta) when this is the only procedure performed.
