Question:

What are the codes for renal stone protocol (CT scan for kidney stones)?

Answer:

As CT urograms (also referred to as “CT IVP”) generally entail imaging of both abdominal and pelvic structures, refer to the “collapsed” code options (74176–74178) when billing for these services instead of the single area, anatomic site-specific codes (72192–72194 or 74150–74170) choices when abdominal and pelvic CT are performed at the same session. Refer to the 2016 AMA/ACR Clinical Examples in Radiology, Volume 12 for additional information on this topic.

74176 Computed tomography, abdomen and pelvis; without contrast material
74177 Computed tomography, abdomen and pelvis; with contrast material(s)
74178 Computed tomography, abdomen and pelvis; without contrast material in one or both body regions, followed by contrast material(s) and further sections in one or both body regions
