Radiology Question for the Week of March 15, 2021

Question:

Should there be an additional charge for MR Elastography (MRE) when performed with MRI of the abdomen? If so, should we use the unlisted code 76948?

Answer:

If both exams (diagnostic MRI and MRE) are ordered and separately performed, then both may be reported. The MRE should not be reported with unlisted code 76948, instead use code 76391 (magnetic resonance [e.g., vibration] elastography) to report the MRE. The documentation must support the medical necessity for both and that two separate technical exams were performed.

76391 Magnetic resonance (eg, vibration) elastography
