Radiology Question for the Week of May 14, 2018

Question:

When performing a breast ultrasound on a patient with a known history of cancer, we are being asked to also scan the supraclavicular, infraclavicular and infra-mammary nodes. How would we code this additional scan?

Answer:

We do not recommend that you report any additional code, especially if this is part of your routine protocol. However, if you did report, it would be the following code, but you need a separate order and medical necessity.

76604-52 Ultrasound, chest (includes mediastinum), real time with image documentation
