Radiology Question for the Week of May 24, 2021

Question:

Are there separate codes for Pyeloric Ultrasound (US) and ultrasound Abdomen? If so, can these be charged separately if ordered on the same day, same session? Or is it all a US abdomen?

Answer:

You would report only the appropriate US abdomen code (once). While there are required elements for a complete US abdomen, other abdominal areas seen are included, when seen at the same session. If you did a stand-alone pyloric ultrasound on a different day, it would be limited abdominal ultrasound 76705. And you can’t code a limited exam and a complete exam at the same time.

76705 Ultrasound, abdominal, real time with image documentation; limited (eg, single organ, quadrant, follow-up)
