Radiology Question for the Week of September 18, 2023

Question:

How would a G-tube placement with an extension into the jejunum at the same session be coded?

Answer:

If an immediate extension is placed into the jejunum at the same session as the initial placement of a G-tube, this would be coded with 49440 for the placement of the G-tube and 49446 for the conversion to a G-J tube. If the G-tube was previously placed and the patient now presents for conversion to a G-J tube only 49446 would be reported.
