Respiratory Question for the Week of February 10, 2020

Question:

What is the code for reporting BiPAP?

Answer:

BiPAP does not have a separate, specific code because it is a component of CPAP. Providers are instructed, per the American Medical Association (AMA), to use code 94660 (continuous positive airway pressure ventilation [CPAP], initiation and management) for reporting the initiation and subsequent management of BiPAP. As with CPAP, BiPAP services are billed per day, not per hour. Note that it is not appropriate to bill for CPAP or BiPAP using codes 94002–94003. These codes are intended for reporting invasive ventilation.
